The honest version

What Ennis is actually like

Ennis is a working ranch town that happens to sit on one of the best trout rivers in the world, and it has never been shy about either fact. Main Street is a few blocks of fly shops, cafes, a saloon or two and a hardware store that actually stocks what you need, with the Madison Range standing up behind it in a way photographs never quite capture. The Madison River is minutes away and fishable for most of the year; Ennis Lake sits just north. The Fourth of July parade and rodeo is close to a century old and effectively shuts the town down in the best way, and the fly fishing festival at Peter T's Park draws people from all over. Madison Valley Medical Center is right in town, which matters more than newcomers expect in a place this size. The trade is distance: Bozeman and its airport are an hour away over Norris Hill, and you will plan errands in batches instead of on impulse.

Who Ennis fits

You are here for the river, the quiet and the views, your work is portable or local, and you would rather drive an hour occasionally than live where you have to hear the interstate.

Who should look elsewhere

You need a daily Bozeman commute, a deep rental or resale market, or a lot of housing choices at once. Inventory here is thin and river property is priced accordingly.

Schools

Schools & childcare

Ennis runs a single K-12 school community, which is the whole appeal for a lot of families: small classes, teachers who know every kid, and enough of a sports and activities program that children are not choosing between them. Rural parcels in the Madison Valley can fall into neighbouring districts with long bus routes, so confirm both the district and the actual bus stop for any address outside town limits before you commit.

FAQ

Ennis, Montana: questions people ask

Is Ennis, Montana a good place to live?

If the river is the reason you are moving to Montana, Ennis is hard to beat. Nine hundred people, a Blue Ribbon stretch of the Madison minutes from Main Street, the Madison Range filling the skyline, a Fourth of July parade and rodeo nearly a century old, and a fly fishing festival each August. Madison Valley Medical Center is right in town.

How far is Ennis from Bozeman?

About an hour to seventy minutes northeast over Norris Hill on Highway 84 or Highway 287, and roughly the same to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. Big Sky is a similar drive. People here batch their errands and think of Bozeman as a monthly trip rather than a daily commute.

Is the fishing in Ennis really that good?

Yes — this is one of the reasons the town exists in its current form. The Madison River is a Blue Ribbon trout fishery fishable most of the year, with Ennis Lake just north and public access within minutes of town. Main Street's fly shops will tell you what is working before you have unpacked the truck.

What is there to do in Ennis, Montana besides fish?

The Fourth of July parade and rodeo effectively shut the town down in the best possible way, the Ennis fly fishing festival fills Peter T's Park each August, and Virginia City's historic district is twenty minutes away. Beyond that: hunting, hiking and skiing in the Madison Range, and a Main Street where people actually stop to talk.

Is it hard to buy a house in Ennis?

Inventory is thin and river or view property carries a premium, so patience and a local ear matter more here than almost anywhere else in Southwest Montana. Buyers who are pre-approved and set up on alerts do well. Clint watches the Madison Valley specifically, including properties that trade quietly before they are listed.

Which school serves Ennis, Montana?

Ennis runs a single K-12 school community, which many families consider the whole point: small classes, teachers who know every kid, and enough activities that children are not forced to choose. Rural Madison Valley parcels can fall into neighbouring districts with long bus routes, so confirm both district and bus stop for a rural address.
