The towns of Southwest Montana, compared
Seven towns across four counties — from Bozeman to Livingston, Ennis and Whitehall. Each one has its own prices, its own personality and its own reasons to stay. Here is how to tell them apart.
Four counties, four river valleys
The Gallatin Valley runs roughly northwest from Bozeman: Belgrade beside the airport, Manhattan twelve minutes west, and Three Forks at the west end where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin join to form the Missouri. East over the Bridgers, Livingston sits on the Yellowstone with Paradise Valley running south toward the park and the Shields Valley opening north.
South and west, Ennis sits on the Madison in Madison County and Whitehall on the Jefferson in Jefferson County. Interstate 90 links most of them, which is why people commonly live in one town and work, shop or ski from another. Tap any town on the map for its full page.
Also in the service area: Gallatin Gateway, Four Corners, Big Sky, West Yellowstone, Clyde Park, Wilsall, Emigrant, Gardiner, Virginia City, Sheridan and Twin Bridges, plus land and acreage in between. Ask me about any of them — each behaves differently from the valley-floor towns.

Bozeman
The valley's center of gravity: a real downtown, a university, a hospital, trailheads fifteen minutes from most front doors — and the highest prices in Montana.
Explore Bozeman
Belgrade
Newer homes, more square footage per dollar, the airport ten minutes away, and a school district that families move here for. The commute is shorter than people expect.
Explore Belgrade
Manhattan
A working farm town with a grain elevator, a well-regarded school, and a main street you can cross in a minute. Twenty-five minutes from Bozeman, a world away in feel.
Explore Manhattan
Three Forks
Where the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin become the Missouri. The lowest prices in Gallatin County, real history, and rivers in three directions.
Explore Three Forks
Livingston
Park County's seat: intact brick storefronts, Montana's oldest rodeo, the Yellowstone River through the middle of town, and Paradise Valley starting at the south edge.
Explore Livingston
Ennis
Nine hundred people, a Blue Ribbon trout river out the back door, and the Madison Range filling the windshield. The most fishing-forward small town in Southwest Montana.
Explore Ennis
Whitehall
Jefferson County prices, the Tobacco Roots out the front window, and interstate access both directions — Bozeman one way, Butte the other.
